According to legend, Qu Yuan was a prominent minister of the State of Chu. He advocated for the alliance between the State of Chu and the State of Qi to jointly resist the State of Qin. But due to his straightforward personality and the slander and exclusion of others, Qu Yuan was alienated by King Huai of Chu. Later, Qu Yuan was dismissed from his official position and exiled to a faraway place. He has always been concerned about his country and its people, and has written many poems that express concern for the country and its people. In 278 BC, the state of Qin conquered the capital of Chu, Yingdu. Upon hearing this news, Qu Yuan was heartbroken and plunged into the surging Miluo River. It is said that when local people heard that Qu Yuan had thrown himself into the river, they rowed boats to rescue him, and then threw rice balls and eggs into the river for fish and shrimp, which later developed into Zongzi. Later, on the fifth day of May every year, there was the custom of Loong Boat race and eating Zongzi to commemorate the patriotic poet Qu Yuan.
In my memory, Loong Boat Festival began on the third day of May. On that day, my mother washed the glutinous rice, soaked it in warm water, covered the lid, and bought dates, meat, etc., saying that she wanted to add ingredients to Zongzi.
On the early morning of May 4th, our whole family went out to pick mugwort. Bring back the mugwort, wash it clean, tie it into bundles, and insert them in front of the door. Soon, the hallway will be filled with the fragrance of mugwort. Mom said that mugwort can repel mosquitoes and ward off evil spirits.
At ten o'clock in the evening, a big project began, that is, making Zongzi. First, fold two Zongzi leaves together, roll them into a funnel, put a big jujube at the bottom, then put the soaked glutinous rice into the funnel, compact them, and wrap the leaves tightly. At this time, make sure that no rice is exposed at the four corners of Zongzi, and finally take out the small but unbreakable Malan grass to bind the Zongzi tightly, so that a Zongzi can be wrapped. I thought it was very interesting, so I followed suit, but either the corner was opened, or it could not be wrapped, and finally I didn't make a complete Zongzi
It is the fifth day of May, that is, the Loong Boat Festival. When I get up in the morning, there are sweet Zongzi on the table, but the taste makes my mouth water. Opening the zongzi leaves, not to mention the aroma, my mother even brought a plate of eggs, each one like watery big eyes, making you even more irresistible! I quickly took a bite of Zongzi, which is soft, glutinous and sweet. If I dip it in some sugar, it will be more delicious.
In the days before and after the Dragon Boat Festival, Zongzi was always on the table, but there was always not enough to eat.
