相传炎帝后商有四支，属于古羌族的四个氏族部落。其中一支是烈山氏。古时烈与厉通，又音赖，故烈山氏、来源历山氏、赖山氏皆同。古时的烈山民居往在山西汾水流城，后有一支东迁于商代在有河南厉乡县建赖国，依附于商朝。周式王代商时，赖人南迁，后来接受周武王的子爵封号，为赖子国。春秋鲁昭公四年，楚灵王灭之，其族人迁至鄙地，其后裔以国为氏，称赖氏。是湖北或河南赖。
