1942年河南大旱，这场罕见的大饥荒，将3000万人民逼上了绝路，他们为了生存被迫走上了流亡的道路。在流亡过程中，河南人民有饿死者数不胜数，一时间，中原大地上，饿殍遍野、触目惊心。

My former employer fled with his family to ensure their survival, but after arriving in Shaanxi, all of his loved ones died. He decided to go back against the flow of refugees.
电影中有两个片段让人触目惊心。一个是老东家的儿媳妇生下一个孩子，人为父母，却说出了一句震惊人的话：“把他掐死吧，在逃荒路上，我身上一点儿奶都没有，养不活他。”还有一位国民党军官说的话，他说如果两个人要同时饿死的话，饿死一个灾民，地方还是中国的，如果当兵的都饿死了，我们就会亡国。
