影片中主要讲高适与李白，少年时期的高适，父亲对他期望很大，希望他能考状元，进朝为官报效国家，他试过无数种学习方法，终究还是没有成功，高适只对习武有着浓厚的兴趣，在习武上有属于自己的一套领地。有一天，一个偶然的机会他与英俊潇洒的李白相遇了，所谓不打不相识，当年的李白性格十分开朗，他喜欢结交有情有义的朋友，性情沉稳的高适就这样与洒脱的李白成为了知己，他们结伴而行以诗会友……在前往长安的路上，俩人都以处处碰壁并还乡深造。
